Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Homeowners Association, warns strata corporations to closely monitor invoices in the wake of BC’s latest strata fraud case.
cbc.ca reports that ex-strata member Patrick Au pleaded guilty to siphoning more than $160,000 from East Vancouver strata Gardenia Villa over a four year period.
“You need to verify that the companies exist, that it was a valid claim, that the expense is reimbursed in the appropriate way and deal with original receipts. Don’t deal with photocopies or photocopies of photocopies of original receipts.” said Gioventu.
Gioventu recommends that two strata members be responsible for handling strata finances, and that detailed monthly expense reports are essential.
